Big Japan Wrestling - Early 1999

Hi folks! A kind soul has posted more Big Japan Wrestling and dammit! I'm going to watch it. Hopefully you find something cool to watch from what I've reviewed.

Chikako Shiratori & Kiyoko Ichiki vs. Chihiro Nakano & Marcela - Joshi in Big Japan! This was very fun wrestling. Shiratori & Kiyoko Ichiki reminded me of Mita & Shimoda. This got good when Marcela got tag in because her & Nakano started doing double team moves. Looking forward to more!

Ikuto Hidaka vs. Fantastik - Hidaka, I know. Fantastik is new to me but, I like him. He did this dive that was super dangerous looking... and super cool!! Definitely want to see more of him. These two did a really fun fireworks action match. There were lots of awesome aerial moves and moves off the Irish whip. Fun bit of lucharesu. BJW is on a roll!

Super Delfin vs. Minoru Fujita - Super Delfin is in BJW!? Looks like the show is in Osaka so they booked him. Cool! He dominated Fujita early with arm locks. Fujita gets some space and gets going with the offensive excitement. This was a good match. Minoru Fujita was super skinny here but his execution was fantastic. He worked well with the veteran Delfin.


Hikaru Kawabata, Ryuji Yamakawa & Tomoaki Honma vs. Jason The Terrible, Masayoshi Motegi & The Winger - Oh yeah, this was a blast to watch! Yamakawa & Honma are young and athletic. Kawabata is their strong man. Jason & Motegi are much stronger but Kawabata can hold them off. Winger is still in good shape and is impressive here. This match really surprised me! It just got better as it continued.


The BJW show surprised me as well. It was super easy to sit and enjoy the wrestling. Nothing dragged on. There's a couple matches I skipped but from these four bouts, BJW but on a very good event for the Osaka crowd. No blood, no barb wire, just plain old wrestling 😋 The main event had Abdullah the Butcher so, I'm guessing there was blood & brawling there. Let's hear it for BJW 1999! This is fun stuff! Let's watch a little more.

Chihiro Nakano & Marcela vs. Kiyoko Ichiki & La Amapola - We get the final minutes of this...more BJW joshi please! This is really scrappy fun stuff.

Minoru Tanaka vs Fantastik - This was clipped but what was shown was crazy in the best way. Did Fantastik do a fire thunder tiger driver!?

Ikuto Hidaka vs. Minoru Fujita - Oh yes!!! They went for broke! This was a great junior battle. One that was way better than you'd think seeing as it was tucked away in the mid card of a BJW show. It was very exciting and very intense. There's plenty of action and great submission wrestling too. It's been awhile since I've seen them in BattlARTS but it definitely had that vibe. I'm a fan of both but seeing them this young and hungry was great RECOMMENDED!




Katsumi Usuda & Ryuji Yamakawa vs. Abdullah Jr. Kobayashi & Daikokubo Benkei - I liked how Usuda & Yamakawa weren't really getting along early on. Yamakawa sold this so well 😄 Eventually they got on the same page. Abby Jr. was going off today so, they had to get him under control. Benkei can be a big oaf sometimes but here he's a big oaf like he needed to be. He's like a tree trunk - able to withstand Katsumi & Ryuji's attacks. It's about 13 minutes long and a ton of fun.


Also on this show is Abdullah the Butcher vs Shadow WX which is fun for what it was. Big Japan has a very interesting mix of wrestling on their cards. It's a little bit of everything.

I'm definitely going to watch more BJW down the road. I know I've got 1990's thru the 2010's on my watch list. Some are DVDs & some online. There's a lot of great wrestling there that I would love to see.  Keep checking back for more Wrestling Dream Battles! Thanks for reading 🙂

OK we're back in New Japan proper this time! That last batch of matches were outstanding though. Check that post out if you haven't done so. December Keiji Muto vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan (12/10) - And that's how you do it!! Finally doing legwork just right! This was a badass bout. Muto's had Tenzan bugging him all year. He starts quickly and tries to eliminate the big headed baddie. Tenzan doesn't get beaten so easily and really takes it to Muto. It's a 10 minute bout and it's great! No overwrought drama or bullshit where they have to kill time. Great stuff!  From the 12/11 show : Dean Malenko & Wild Pegasus vs. Hiro Saito & Sabu - Haha! Yes Sabu & Big boy Hiro Saito are a great team! Malenko & Benoit have their hands full with them. If Saito isn't raking the eyes or hitting someone in the nuts, Sabu is flying at them like a riderless dirt bike at an outlaw motocross race. I loved this match. Yearbook - NJPW - 1995

Hi folks! I thought that 1990's New Japan wrestling was only about the Junior wrestlers - Jushin Liger, Pegasus Kid, Black Tiger II (Eddie Guerrero), Koji Kanemoto et al. I've come to understand that the heavyweight wrestlers had a lot to offer too. The reason for this misunderstanding was due to how highly rated the Juniors matches were rated by Dave Meltzer and folks in the internet wrestling community. These matches and shows seemed to be the equivalent of AJPW's amazing heavyweight bouts. Battles between Ultimo Dragon and Shinjiro Otani were getting as many stars & accolades as Misawa vs Kawada. Therefore, I (and many others) wanted to watch that! And I'm really glad that I did. I also think WCW's cruiserweight division contributed to this viewing bias. A person can easily find that Benoit, Guerrero, Malenko, Ultimo Dragon all had significant matches over in NJPW. On top of that, they can find that their matches were against Liger Kanemoto, Otani, and others...

Yearbook - NJPW - 1995 - G1 Climax

Hi wrestling fans! This time we're taking a brief look at the  1995 G1 Climax ! While I don't have the 1995 G1 Climax tournament in full, I do have some footage from a commercial set which should give me a sense of the matches and the best stuff in digest/joined in progress form. Something is better than nothing! I did find a few of the better reviewed matches available with some digging so I'll do full reviews of those and will mention if they're complete. Otherwise, assume they are digest form. From 08/11: Shinya Hashimoto vs Scott Norton - Fun stuff with Norton man handling Hash and Hash lighting Norton up with kicks. Keiji Muto vs. Shiro Koshinaka - I actually started the full version of it but Muto started doing his legwork routine. Koshinaka was going along so I switched to the digest version.
