March Mayhem: Andre the Giant vs Killer Khan - 03/19/82

Andre the Giant vs Killer Khan (NJPW): This is two big dudes beating each other up! Well, Andre is more than big. The dude is a giant! He looks like a wildman with his shaggy hair and beard. Khan is shaken up but he's not backing down. This is a bunch of fun. Andre & Khan bring a lot of character & energy to this match. It's part of the MSG League which I think is a precursor to the G1 Climax. Also I would recommend watching the Andre vs Inoki "match" from 03/26/82. It's super short yet exciting plus it adds more drama to the Andre vs Khan feud.

Hello wrestling fans!  Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi was the ultimate rivalry when I got into Japanese wrestling. Dave Meltzer gave their matches all kinds of stars (back when it meant something). Their matches for AJPW in the late 90's pushed the boundaries of what pro wrestling could be. I definitely think their matches are worth seeing to this day. If you haven't seen their work against each other then, I have a guide for you! I'm trying to work through my DVDs still! Most/all of these are from AJW Athena TV episodes. I think someone compiled the best of a bunch of episodes. These are a sort of consultation prize on my AJW 09/21/97 DVD that cuts off the end of the famous cage match. Zap I is Kaoru Ito and Zap T is Tomoko Watanabe for reference. 02/16/99 ZAP I & T vs. Kumiko Maekawa & Kayo Noumi - This is how you do a studio TV match! Fast, violent and entertaining! The ZAPs are on the warpath. Maekawa can put up a fight but Kayo is a lamb for the slaughter. Kumiko tries her best but Ito & Tomoko are their normal high impact selves plus with weapons too! This was great! LCO are in the stands & mix it up with them afterwards. Yay! Abdullah The Butcher vs Kevin Sullivan (10/02/93 - ECW Bloodfest - Steel Cage Match) : Nice violent stuff! My favorite bit was when Woman comes out to stop Abby from choking Sullivan. Then the Madman from Sudan goes after the vivacious valet; her eyes rolling back in her head and Kevin Sullivan whacks the Butcher with a chair!! Damn you can hear it smack his broad back like a Ric Flair chop! Inside the ring is the good but standard "use the cage as a weapon" fighting. Taz comes out and throws a metal briefcase in there to help Sullivan. Then it gets really good again 😁 Fun, fun stuff.

Yearbook - NJPW - 1995

Hi folks! I thought that 1990's New Japan wrestling was only about the Junior wrestlers - Jushin Liger, Pegasus Kid, Black Tiger II (Eddie Guerrero), Koji Kanemoto et al. I've come to understand that the heavyweight wrestlers had a lot to offer too. The reason for this misunderstanding was due to how highly rated the Juniors matches were rated by Dave Meltzer and folks in the internet wrestling community. These matches and shows seemed to be the equivalent of AJPW's amazing heavyweight bouts. Battles between Ultimo Dragon and Shinjiro Otani were getting as many stars & accolades as Misawa vs Kawada. Therefore, I (and many others) wanted to watch that! And I'm really glad that I did. I also think WCW's cruiserweight division contributed to this viewing bias. A person can easily find that Benoit, Guerrero, Malenko, Ultimo Dragon all had significant matches over in NJPW. On top of that, they can find that their matches were against Liger Kanemoto, Otani, and others...
