Zero One Wrestling - 2007 - Part 1
Happy New Year! If you follow me on PWO then you know I have an interest in Zero One Wrestling. In my own wrestling research, I've found it difficult to get a good read on the promotion. Cagematch has a couple reviews here and there. I would say there's only one person on there that I trust their opinion and taste. So I thought I'd check it out myself by going through what's available online and cherry picking matches that I think look good. Originally I was going to watch a few matches per show but that was way too much. Again, if you've read my other posts here or on PWO, grandpa bought a bunch of DVDs that he's gotta watch. Good news is that I do have a DVD for Zero One and will be covering that later. So I can justify watching a some other stuff online. Anyhow, let's start 2007 Zero One Wrestling!
Mammoth Sasaki & Daisuke Sekimoto v Ryoji Sai & Yoshihito Sasaki (01/19) - 15 minutes of hard hitting, fast paced wrestling! My favorite pairing was Sekimoto & Y. Sasaki. Man, those were some fatal looking lariats! Mammoth and Sai were very good as well. They brought variety to the mix - Sai with his kicks & Mammoth with his power moves. Great tag match.
Shinjiro Otani & Takao Omori & Kazunari Murakami v Yoshihiro Takayama & Kohei Sato & Hirotaka Yokoi (01/19) - Yes! Oh this is awesome! Everyone is beating the ever-loving crap out of each other! Omori & Takayama are trying to end each other. But they managed to keep the intensity up and work a great organic final third of the match too. I really wonder if some of these spots were planned or if they just went with the flow. Takayama is bleeding by the end of the match. Post match violence and talking smack on the mic's... Classic shit.
Shinjiro Otani & Takao Omori v Yoshihiro Takayama & Kohei Sato (02/18) - You absolutely want to see this!! This is a grudge match. It's not a "grudge" match but nothing new really happens. Oh no, this is a doozy. Takayama is is bleeding from two places on his head, his hair is red from the blood, he's wearing a chair frame like a necklace... Omori is bleeding from his nose and am not sure he wasn't actually loopy at the end. I didn't mention Otani yet...he does not get enough love for his reinvention after joining Zero One Wrestling. He's a surly bastard. Sure Takayama is one of the toughest wrestlers ever...but Otani doesn't mind and drills him in the face multiple times. And gets his receipts too! Kohei Sato was there as support to the blonde giant. He got his partner out of jams & took the heat for awhile. Make no mistake, this wasn't a match. This was a fight. This reminded me of Jim Duggan vs Ted DiBiase in Mid South honestly. More classic wrestling!
Manabu Nakanishi & Takao Omori v Yoshihiro Takayama & Kohei Sato (03/08) - Back at Korakuen Hall - battling and bleeding again. This time Omori is with NJPW's Manabu Nakanishi. Now Omori has his own gorilla! This was more straightforward of a tag match than the earlier encounters with Otani. But, that doesn't mean they weren't trying to rattle each other's jaws with elbows, European upper cuts and kicks. Omori was bleeding from the lips/mouth within a minute. This was a battle! Near classic tag match.
Dick Togo & Masao Orihara & Macho Pump v Tatsuhito Takaiwa & Ikuto Hidaka & Minoru Fujita (04/07) - Cool outdoor pavilion venue. Holy cow, they brought the action to the county fair! 17 minutes of 6 man junior wrestling and it's exactly what you'd expect from these guys. So many cool maneuvers plus Togo's team were clear heels so that added to the entertainment. I have my match list set for 2007 but if time permits, I might see what other matches like this are available. This was a very good time!
This has been a great project so far. Of course that's bound to happen when selectively watching. That said, my goal is to see if there is great stuff available for Zero One Wrestling in 2007 and not to give an in depth review of the year. I don't have the time or patience for that anymore! 🙂 More to come shortly! I think I'm picking some quality wrestling. By the way, I'm working on All Japan 1986 as well. Stay tuned for that! Thanks for reading folks!
